EU IKS MEDIUM LOGOA KONKURS

COMPETITION
FOR SELECTING SECONDARY SCHOOL JOURNALISTIC TEAMS
TO MARK THE EUROPEAN MEDIA LITERACY WEEK 2020

"Be Media Active"

The Delegation of the European Union to the Republic of North Macedonia and the Institute of Communication Studies (ICS) hereby invite secondary school students in the country to apply for the #BeMediActive competition and jointly celebrate European Media Literacy Week 2020. Secondary school students should submit proposals for creating journalistic stories that they would produce in partnership with one of the media outlets in the Republic of North Macedonia. Proposed ideas for journalistic stories should clearly delineate a particular problem that young people face. The idea of the competition is for secondary school students to acquire new or improve existing journalistic skills and draw public attention and challenge decision makers to solve the problems of the youth, through media support and journalistic training.

ELIGIBILITY

The competition is open to all secondary school students from first to fourth year, who will apply as a team of four students and one professor-coordinator, all coming from the same school. Teams should submit a completed application and written consent from the Editor-in-Chief of the media outlet with which they would produce the proposed journalistic story. All radio and television stations, newspapers and online media outlets registered in the Association of Journalists of Macedonia are eligible. By giving its consent, the media outlet confirms its willingness to join the celebration of the European Media Literacy Week 2020. The media outlet should appoint an experienced journalist to work with the students, monitor the production process of the team and publish their story in March or April 2020 .

A team may submit only one proposal. Multiple teams can apply from the same school. One professor can be the coordinator of more than one team from the same school.

PREPARATION OF JOURNALISTIC STORIES AND FINANCIAL SUPPORT

Six teams will be selected at the competition, whose stories are to be produced by March 13, 2020. The story format should be suited to the partnering media outlet (radio or television segment, article and/or multimedia story). The journalistic stories can be made in the languages used in the Republic of North Macedonia.

ICS, as organizer of the a competition, will organize one-day workshops for all team members and the journalists from the partnering media outlets, which will outline in detail the production of the story: identifying sources, collecting data, field research, format and length of the journalistic story, production plan and publication. Students will produce the story themselves (with mobile phones). The partnering media outlet will provide them with mentoring support through a journalist who will monitor and guide their work.

ICS will organize the trainings and cover travel costs for the trainees.

Each secondary school team will receive 400 euros in MKD equivalent for production and fieldwork costs. Each journalist from the partnering media outlet will receive 200 euros in MKD equivalent for their mentoring role in producing the story.

Apart from the fact that all journalistic stories will be published in the media, they will also be presented at a debate as a closing event organized by ICS and the Delegation of the European Union at the end of March 2020 in Skopje and will be part of a series of events organized by the European Commission as part of the European Media Literacy Week.

SCORING CRITERIA

The ideas or pitches for journalistic stories should depict a problem, an occurrence and an imperative for change that young people need. Students should clearly point out how this problem is reflected in the quality of life of young people, the reasons that lead to it and where they see the solution.

The proposal may cover different areas: secondary education; local youth problem; youth initiatives and activism; (dis)respecting the right to a healthy environment;, ecology; culture and opportunities for cultural expression of young people; youth and media; social and health protection; sports and youth; etc.

Hence, the content and argumentation of the problem and the clarity of the message that secondary school students should communicate through their journalistic story is extremely important. Proposals with original ideas and with a clear intent to apply investigative journalistic techniques will take precedence.

REGISTRATION

Candidates should fill in the Application form and Consent from the Editor-in-Chief of the partnering media outlet and submit them to medium@medium.edu.mk latest by February 16, 2020.

SELECTION

The selection of six proposals for journalistic stories will be carried out by a five-member commission comprised of three ICS representatives, one secondary school student and one professor who have been active correspondents for the secondary school newspaper Medium over the last 4-5 years.

The results, i.e. the selected participants will be published on the web site www.medium.edu.mk on February 19,  2020.
